At least seven people died and more than a dozen were injured in the West Texas cities of Midland and Odessa after a shooter began randomly firing at people Saturday afternoon, authorities said.⠀

Three of the 21 people shot were law-enforcement officers, Odessa's police chief said. The suspect was killed by police.⠀

The gunfire began a when Department of Public Safety trooper attempted a traffic stop, during which the suspect pointed a rifle toward the rear window of his car and fired several shots toward the DPS patrol unit, hitting a trooper, authorities said.⠀

The suspect then drove into Odessa, where he began targeting people at random. At some point, he stole a U.S. mail truck and continued shooting people. Officers ultimately shot the suspect, who was killed at a movie theater in Odessa.

Seth Aaron Ator, 36, who lived in the Odessa area, had been fired from his job at Journey Oilfield Services after a disagreement, according to Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke.
