Can I eat packaged food after its expiry date has passed?

This is a decision you will have to make for yourself. Note though that consuming such foods are potentially dangerous to health as you can’t tell for how long after the expiry date the product remains safe for consumption.

Hence, even if a meal smells or tastes fine after its expiry date has passed, it would be best to throw it out. If noticed on a shelf before purchase, search for another with a much farther expiry date.

Is there a difference between the expiry date and best before?

In Nigeria, these two terms are used interchangeably. Some though, interpret expiry date as the date at which a product is no longer fit for use while best before indicates that a product isn’t just bad yet, just not at its best.

Well, “best before” indicates that in terms of quality, a product will no longer be on par after the date specified.

Expiry date, on the other hand, is more about the safety period.

To be on the safer side, if you notice that the date indicated on a product has passed, be it the expiry date or best before, do not purchase it and if you have before taking note, discard it promptly.

Some individuals are under the impression that discarding such is a waste of their resources, their money, and the product. But, it’s better to discard an expired product of #100 than to treat its consequences with 100 times more its cost.
