Kenyan actor, producer and now author Lupita Nyongo has written a heart-warming children’s book with a powerful message.

Sulwe is a magical picture book about a little girl navigating colorism, self-esteem and learning that true beauty comes from within.

The Academy Award-winning actor spoke to BBC Newsnight about the issue of colorism in film and TV, saying, ‘We still ascribe to these notions of Eurocentric standards of beauty, that then affect how we see ourselves among ourselves.’

‘Race is a very social construct, one that I didn’t have to ascribe to on a daily basis growing up. As much as I was experiencing colorism in Kenya, I wasn’t aware that I belonged to a race called black.’

#Sulwe is available now in all good bookstores ✨📚
