Slowly we are transitioning into that season characterized by cool, dust-laden wind and extreme dryness. The harmattan which occurs between the end of November and the middle of March can be very harsh to one's health.

Our bodies note the weather changes and react accordingly. Some of the effects of the harmattan include dry skin (because of the obvious loss of moisture), cracked lips, sole of the feet and even the skin itself (cracks even become ulcerated).
Below are three health tips to keep in mind during the harmattan season.

Stay Hydrated
This is probably the most important tip on this list. Drink a lot of water even if you have to carry around a bottle of water.

Steer clear of caffeinated beverages such as coffee and even tea because they are diuretics and diuretics increase the excretion of water from bodies.

Eat A Lot Of Fruits
Fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals that would keep your body healthy during the harmattan season.

It is advised to eat fruits rich in vitamin C such as mango, papaya, pineapple, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, watermelon, guavas, bell peppers, kiwifruit, oranges, papayas, broccoli, tomatoes, kale.

Skin Care
The skin is one of the first receptors of the harsh weather. The dryness in the atmosphere drains the skin of moisture. It is therefore important to regularly moisturizes the skin.

Ensure to use an oil-based moisturizer such as vaseline, shea butter, coconut oil, etc. Also, exfoliate your skin a few times a week to help shave off dead and dry skin cells and allow new skin cells to come up.
