Since 2014, Yemen has been torn by civil war with more than half of health facilities in the country destroyed. Cholera, malnutrition, dengue fever, diphtheria, and now the coronavirus pandemic are rife in the country. Doctor Sami Yahya al-Hajj, from the capital Sanaa, is hailed for his initiative. Last year, when the pandemic hit, he started giving free medical consultations to the poor on the streets.

The 28-year-old doctor put a sticker on the rear window of his car that reads: “Stop me if you need a medical consultation.”

In his free time, Dr. Al-Hajj parks his car on the roadside and gives life-saving medical advice and prescriptions for free to those who need it.
